The course of study

If you want to study languages, then the Bachelor's programme Language and Communication is ideal for you. You will receive a solid linguistic basis during your studies and have the opportunity to choose one or two linguistic focus areas (German, English, French, Spanish).

The degree programme is interdisciplinary: Here, German, English/American and Romance studies work closely together. In the study of language and individual languages, you focus not only on their forms and structure, but also on cross-linguistic communicative practices and knowledge structures. Thus, the functions of language as a medium at the intersection of individual, interaction, society and culture are also considered.

My name is Karine Demergi and I have been studying Language and Communication at the University of Siegen since 2017. The Bachelor's programme Language and Communication not only enables students to learn the form and structure of a language, but also conveys cross-linguistic structures and the various functions of language as a means of communication for different areas. This course of study offers students several study models in which a linguistic focus is chosen. I decided to focus on English, because I am always interested in this language and I was aware of how safe and pleasant I will feel with the English language during my studies. Forensic linguistics was one of the most exciting courses of this course of study for me. It is a branch of linguistics and deals with the investigation of crimes. I found it extremely interesting to learn that it is possible, for example, to find out the origin of an offender through linguistic aspects.

From my own experience, I can also convince you that writing term papers is instructive for your studies. In my view, there are three valid reasons for this:

A lot of literature is required for the writing of a term paper, i.e. you deal intensively with the respective topic You learn how to write work scientifically correctly You prepare yourself ideally for the bachelor thesis

As a student of linguistics, I would like to emphasize the importance and diversity of this course of study. It is used in many different fields, such as criminology (forensic linguistics) and can therefore be classified as beneficial for different professional fields. You can later work with this linguistic competence in areas such as tourism, marketing, as an interpreter, language teacher, speech therapy, etc.
