The course of study
The subject of psychology is the description and explanation of human behavior and experience. To this end, psychology investigates internal and external causes of human behavior in order to derive general laws that extend over the entire lifespan and to determine individual differences. As an empirical science, it consists on the one hand of natural sciences and on the other hand of humanities and social sciences.
The Bachelor's degree program Psychology at the University of Siegen offers a broad basic course of study, consisting of a methodological training (empirical-scientific work, statistics, diagnostics, experimental psychology internship), the basic area (general psychology, biological psychology, developmental psychology, differential psychology, social psychology), the field of application (clinical psychology, work, organizational psychology and pedagogical psychology), a job-related internship and the bachelor's thesis. The content is based on the criteria of the ‘B.Sc. Psychology’ of the German Psychological Society (DGPs).
In addition, the bachelor's program depicts the contents according to the PsychThApprO.

Career prospects
For most professional fields within psychology, a bachelor's degree in psychology is not a sufficient qualification. Only the consecutive Master's degree programme opens up many career opportunities. Currently, Master's graduates have very good chances on the job market. You can work in various, constantly growing professional fields:
- Teaching and research
- Clinical psychology and psychotherapy (e.g. after a postgraduate psychotherapy training in own practice, in psychiatric and psychosomatic clinics)
- Work, organizational and business psychology (e.g. in personnel development)
- Educational psychology (e.g. as a school psychologist)
- Market research, advertising agencies, opinion research institutes, media psychologist
- Health psychologist, traffic psychologist, sports psychologist, expert for forensic psychology
This is what Elisa Braunsdorf says about her course of study:
"I want to stay here!"

Psychology – I have always been fascinated by this science. I wanted to understand how people work, how our feelings arise, how we perceive the world around us. What is the human personality? How does our psyche develop over the lifespan? Why do some people suffer from a mental disorder and others don't? All this and so many other questions have been with me for a long time and still I probably don't even know half of all there is to know about psychology!
The Bachelor of Psychology is very broad. You get versatile insights into the psychology of the personality, into clinical psychology, social psychology and also into work and organizational psychology, to name just a few of the many areas that I was allowed to get to know. It was nice to be able to get a taste of the various areas without having to commit to an area immediately.
For me, studying psychology at the University of Siegen is also characterized by two other points: On the one hand, the cohorts with 60 students per year are pleasantly small. While in other degree programs, even after 3 years of study, many of his fellow students are still unknown, I already knew all the students of my cohort after only one month! On the other hand, many committed professors work in the field of psychology, who always have an open ear for us students and think of great teaching concepts to bring us closer to the contents of the respective subject. So it will certainly never be boring!
After completing my bachelor's degree, one thing was certain for me: Here I want to stay! I have opted for the Master's degree in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy at the University of Siegen and am looking forward to everything I can learn in the field of clinical psychology, but also beyond.
