The course of study
The Master's program in Materials Science and Engineering (MatWerk) is interesting for you if you have already completed a bachelor's degree in engineering or natural sciences and you lacked the depth with regard to the materials and their properties in engineering studies or if you have asked yourself the question of appropriate applications in natural science studies.
In both cases, the MatWerk course of study is ideally suited to fill these gaps. Based on your bachelor's degree, the MatWerk degree program in Siegen provides you with in-depth knowledge of the physical properties of materials, based on their atomic structure, as well as the relationships between production and processing, structure and properties of materials. This allows you to better understand the behaviour of technical components and to take into account aspects of environmental compatibility and sustainability.
5 reasons to study MatWerk in Siegen
✓ individual support by internationally renowned researchers
✓ multi-cultural and familial study atmosphere
✓ good connection to the chairs with various opportunities for student part-time jobs as well as projects in research and teaching
✓ great freedom of choice for the individual design of the study program
✓ excellent career opportunities in the field of natural and engineering sciences
Career prospects
With a continuing shortage of skilled workers and declining student numbers in the natural and engineering sciences, the current career opportunities are as good as rarely before. With a completed Master's degree MatWerk from Siegen, you have access to all professional fields in which new materials are required or which are to be used/processed. In particular, this applies to the areas of energy and environmental technology, microelectronics and the automotive industry. Some examples of professional fields are:
- Basic research
- Material testing
- Material development
- Manufacturing technology
- Materials consulting
- Damage analysis
- distribution
Admission requirements
The Master's programme in Materials Science and Engineering (MatWerk) starts in both the winter and summer semesters. Requirements for admission are a bachelor's degree with a grade of 3.0 or better in the fields of engineering or natural sciences. For degrees from abroad, proof of sufficient German language skills must also be provided – DSH 2 or 3 (German Language Examination for International Students) or an equivalent is required.
Study structure
The subject structure of the degree programme takes into account your engineering or scientific background (bachelor's degree) and consists of three parts:
- General compulsory part: Theoretical & experimental foundations of materials science
- Supplements according to the Bachelor's degree:
- Supplement to the natural sciences (for bachelor's graduates in engineering) or
- Completion of engineering sciences (for bachelor's graduates in natural sciences)
- Individual part:
- Three elective modules from the natural and/or engineering sciences
- A selectable interdisciplinary module from the so-called cross-sectional subjects
- Specialist laboratory, seminar and individual supplements
.
Study organisation
Subject examination regulations and module descriptions/course plan/internship regulations
Subject examination regulations (FPOs) define the basic structures of a course of study (e.g. entry requirements and content to be studied). For students, the current version of an FPO automatically applies when enrolling in the first semester. This means that even in the event of changes to the FPO during the course of your studies, the original version according to which you have registered is valid (provided that this FPO does not expire). Additional regulations and details for each module to be studied can also be found in the annexes to the subject examination regulations (e.g. requirements for taking a written examination or information on the content of the modules/events, ...).
The respective course plan represents the recommended exemplary course of study in the individual subjects and is part of an FPO.
The Traineeship Regulations define the conditions under which mandatory or optional traineeships must be completed.
Before the start of the lecture period, we recommend that you at least look at the course schedule of your course of study so that you know which modules are planned for the start of your studies.
