With History of Modernity, you study a question-oriented Master's programme in History with a temporal focus on modernity. The question(s) of modernity is/are therefore central in your studies:
What constitutes modernity, what are essential moments of modernity, and what does modernity mean for our present?
During your studies, you will learn that the concept of modernity contains central instruments for analyzing societies and understanding the present and future.
The Master's program History of Modernity enables you in a special way to recognize societies in the past and present in their internal dynamics and to understand development potentials.

Graduates of the Master's program in Modern History have a professionalized scientific-methodological approach to social and political phenomena and a deep understanding of their processivity, which is relevant in a variety of non-university professional fields. In addition to independent access to numerous areas of cultural thought and social life, the degree program also prepares students for a possible doctoral degree.
Admission requirements
- Bachelor's degree in history or a first professional qualification in a comparable course of study.
- The bachelor's degree must be a qualified degree. The bachelor's degree is a qualified degree if the bachelor's degree has been completed with a grade of at least 2.7.
- In addition, the ability to consider literature and sources in two modern foreign languages must be demonstrated. Proof is provided by submitting appropriate text passages.

In addition to the framework examination regulations (RPO-M) and the general subject-specific regulations of the subject examination regulations (PHIL-FPO-M), the subject examination regulations of the individual (sub-)courses of study (FPOs) define the basic structures of a (sub-)course of study (e.g. entry requirements and content to be studied). The subject examination regulations are accompanied by course plans, which represent the recommended exemplary course of study in the individual subjects, as well as module descriptions (content information on modules).
For students, the current version of an FPO automatically applies when enrolling in the first semester.
