The supplementary subject

Art history – this may sound old-fashioned, but it is not. This is because the subject is no longer just related to the ‘Old Masters’. Today, art history sees itself as part of an interdisciplinary visual science that takes into account the importance of the visual in our living environment. The imagery of the media is now just as much a subject of the subject as popular culture and the varieties of international contemporary art.

The aim of the supplementary subject is to profitably link the traditional contents of the subject with the current perspectives. On the one hand, it aims to convey the knowledge of the epochs, genres and styles of Western art in all its breadth and to lead to the independent analysis of aesthetic phenomena. Basic skills in the field of visuality and pictorial history are taught in order to be able to take an argumentative and critical stand on general pictorial and pictorial artistic questions in the present and history. The basic art-historical education covers the period from antiquity, the Middle Ages and modern times to modernity and the present.
